The Chinese New Year is celebrated on the second new moon (Lunar) after the Winter Solstice (Solar).

 

2008 ushers in the beginning of a new 12 year cycle. Through February 6, 2008, however, we will still be in a Year of the boar, the last of the current cycle of 12 animals in Chinese and Tibetan astrology. ...is about finishing, endings and making way for beginnings. [Pigs] are a big statement to the collective psyche—wrap things up and move on. Then on February 7th, we enter the Year of the Earth Rat, the first in the next astrological cycle.

The Chinese New Year of 2008 marks a period of new starts, being the Year of the Yellow [Earth] Rat....The ‘Rat’ is the commencement of the Chinese cycle.... 2008 looks to be a year of unexpected outcomes.

It is of particular interest to note that the Chinese New Year begins on 7 Feb 2008, with a partial solar eclipse and a small stellium conjunct the 15th degree of Aquarius, well-known in mundane astrological circles as a ‘disaster degree’, with Pluto on an Aries point (0 Capricorn 21) as well in semi-square to the stellium....

The eclipse of 7 Feb 2008 is a North Node eclipse, bringing about new starts. For now, though, it is time to have a ‘spring clean’ for the psyche and prepare for the interlude of the spiritual year (December solstice and Capricorn full moon) in preparation for the high points of the year to come with the Aries, Taurus and Gemini festivals of 2008....

Numeric Counting Systems

A calendar system needs, first of all, a way to count the years. Since there are many numeric counting systems, the Chinese calendar uses a unique counting system (sexagenary cycles).

The binary system has 2 numbers: 0 and 1.

The decimal system has 10 numbers: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

The hexadecimal system has 16 numbers: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,F

The sexagenary system uses 10 numbers in the "first" ( or heavenly stem) positions and 12 numbers in the "second" ( or earthly branch) positions.

These make up a total of 60 numbers.

The 12 numbers in the second (earth) positions are:

Animal Representation
As a way to help with memorization (like "A is for Apple" in American Alphebet books), each of the 12 numbers in the second (earthly branch) is also represented by an "animal."

Rats are revered for their intelligence, yet since the Rat is the First Earth Branch, a propensity for natural leadership sees the Rat view its environment as a domain to be investigated, mapped out and controlled. Chinese astrologer Theodora Lau perceives the Rat as a leader, innovator and instigator, yet a creature who pokes her/his nose everywhere.

Rat In Love Rat's generosity knows no bounds. Sentimental and sensuous, all is romance and passion, until, that is, the point when Rat starts feeling too secure. Then out comes selfish and demanding streaks. Outwardly cool and oozing personal magnetism, Rats are passionate lovers but usually remain sexually faithful. Best Partners: steady Ox, energetic Dragon and ingenious Monkey. Horse is to be avoided.

 

 

Rat is very easy to breed and it can reach sexual maturity at 5 weeks of age. Rats do not recognize incest. So the rat reproduction speed is very fast. In Chinese astrology, Rat is a Lust Star, which has a noble term.

Describing the nature of the Year of the Earth Rat, that is, what everyone can expect from it. The next outlines how you are likely to fare overall, including four specific areas: career, relationships, health and wealth.

After two, Fire years life may seem calmer during this Earth year. That could be deceptive, however, as the Rat never stops moving, especially when it comes to mental activity.

Unfortunately Earth has a destructive relationship with the Rat's fixed element, Water. This is not disastrous, but it does mean people should not rely too much on luck this year.

On the other hand the combination of Earth and Rat is extremely positive when it comes to achieving results. The Rat tends to take a lot of risks, while Earth is associated with practicality and stability. This creates balance and can lead to good profits, increased productivity and all sorts of accomplishments. And, under Earth's influence there could be fewer scandals than in other, Rat years.

Since this is an Earth year those people born in a Metal year will generally fare better than others of their animal sign, while those born in a Water year are likely to do worse than those born in Wood, Fire, and Earth years.
